Rotavirus gastroenteritis is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea among children. It is primarily is by faeco-oral transmission.

Incubation period
1-3 days.
Signs and Symptoms
- Sudden onset water diarrhoea, with or without vomiting.
- Dehydration
- Symptoms may last up to 6 days.
Diagnosis
Detection of virus in stools.
Treatment
Oral rehydration is generally enough but may need hospitalization for intravenous fluids and electrolytes.
Control and Prevention
- Improved hygiene,
- Education,
- Clean water,
- Breast feeding helps to provide passive immunity in the newborn (from maternal antibodies).
